College Football organisers YUSU have shocked the clubs by ditching the leagues in term 1. In its place will be the cup competition usually held in term 3. The news came via an email at 6:30pm from Maddi Cannell, York Sport Union President, just 3 days before the start of fixtures.
The format of college football for many years has been 5 leagues of 8 teams competing during term 1, and the same in term 2. It allows a complete season of 7 games before Christmas, and once teams have been promoted and relegated, the points reset for the start of term 2.
The cup competition, along with the vase and plate are held during term 3 with 60 minute matches. The idea is to not take it too seriously and it gives people a gentle distraction during exam season. Due to the way term 3 works, by the time of the latter stages, most people have gone home and the final is reliably an anti-climax.
This decision will do nothing to repair the deep resentment felt towards YUSU by the college football community, who have once again been ignored by the body who claim to represent students. Major changes to the way college sport is organised have been implemented without consultation with the football clubs, who now have a bureaucratic nightmare on their hands. The manifesto pledge to "Create a dynamic, democratic College Sport Governance system with student leaders at its heart" is looking more and more like satire with each week.
